Joshua 1:6-9 Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
To live in courage requires encouragement. In the time we live in, most people do not carry a happy countenance. We are too serious. We take ourselves too seriously. This makes it hard to be happy. If we could just get to the place that we are satisfied and content, we would be a lot happier. The common mindset is not having enough. There are constant challenges in the time we live in. when those challenges come, we need to know how to respond to them properly.
1 Samuel 30:1-6 Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, 2 and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way. 3 So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. 4 Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 5 And David’s two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive. 6 Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
This was a terrible day for David. His city was burned, and all the women and children were abducted. Then the very men he had trained and devoted himself to, turned on him with anger and wanted to kill him. Verse 6 says that he was “greatly distressed.” But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God. What do you do when there is no one there to encourage you? You must learn to encourage yourself. You must know where to go to get encouragement. There are times that people are in your life to encourage you. But what do you do when they are not there? God is always there. He is never against you! He is never down on you! He will never condemn you, even if you deserve it! Conviction is not condemnation. There is a difference. Condemnation leaves you with no way out. Conviction points a way out. The enemy feeds you lies to make the problem seem so big that there is no solution. It weighs heavy on you! We are to be people of joy and peace!
Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
We must learn to live life one day at a time. Don’t bring problems that aren’t even there into today! The verse says, don’t worry about tomorrow! Your salvation is secure! What else is there to worry about? If you can have faith that your eternity is secure, why can’t you be secure in today and what will happen tomorrow?
When we are experiencing oppression, it is demonic forces we are dealing with. It is not talked about enough in churches today. It comes on you so subtly that you start to believe that this is just the life you live. But that is a lie. God provided a way that we can live above it. God wants us to have peace of heart and mind, and joy with it. We must learn how to strengthen and encourage ourselves in the Lord. If you’re going to be happy in life, you must ruthlessly remove hurry from your life. We must learn to be thankful! You can’t be thankful and depressed at the same time! Its impossible! There is always something to be thankful for. You must be thankful even when things are difficult. Daily you must go to the Lord and strengthen yourself. If you will do it daily, and do it first thing in the morning, no matter what that day brings you, you will be on top not the bottom. There will be days that things and people will come into your life in an overwhelming way. And if you don’t have the strength and the courage for it, it will take you down. Establish a relationship with the Encourager.
1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
Less fear requires more love. If you increase the love, you’ll increase the fear. If you want to increase the love, you have to increase the fellowship. When you set aside time to be with God, you are fellowshipping with love. It is very simple!
